Why Gratitude Is More Than a Feeling—It's a Healing Habit

Gratitude isn’t just a warm fuzzy feeling—it’s something that’s deeply woven into my daily life. For me, it’s a mindset and a healing habit that’s made a real difference in both my health and wellness. In this episode of Better Than A Pill, I dove into the importance of making gratitude part of our lifestyle, and why it’s not just something to practice once in a while, but something to live by.

I start every day with prayer and thanksgiving. Sometimes it’s as simple as saying “Thank you, God” the moment I open my eyes. One of my clients does the same thing, and it’s changed her entire perspective. That simple act of acknowledgment—of appreciating the moment before the day even begins—helps us stay present, grounded, and connected.

Gratitude also helps in hard times. Just the other day, an unexpected trip to urgent care could’ve derailed my mood and my mindset. But instead of spiraling into frustration, I found myself saying, “Thank you, God, for taking care of us.” It wasn’t perfect, but gratitude helped me choose peace over panic.

I also keep a gratitude journal, and let me tell you—it’s powerful. Writing down even a few things each day that I’m thankful for shifts my brain into a different space. And science backs this up. Gratitude activates the brain’s dopamine and serotonin systems—two major “feel-good” neurotransmitters. These chemicals are responsible for feelings of pleasure, happiness, and motivation.

What’s amazing is how far-reaching the benefits are. Studies have shown that gratitude lowers stress (by reducing cortisol), improves sleep, boosts the immune system, eases symptoms of depression, and even improves heart health. Gratitude truly touches every part of our being.

The goal is to make gratitude a habit—just like how we build routines around movement, sleep, or healthy eating. It doesn't have to be complicated. It can start with just a sentence or two in your journal or a moment of quiet reflection. What matters is consistency.

I want to encourage you to start somewhere. Even if your life feels chaotic or your health isn’t where you want it to be, gratitude is a tool you can use today. And if you’re struggling with low energy, back pain, or just feeling off, I’m here to help.

Gratitude has the power to change everything—and I’m living proof. So let’s make thankfulness a daily practice, together.
